UC Davis Samba School

WEBSITE

The UC Davis Samba School is modeled after the great Escolas de Samba from Rio de Janiero that parade in Carnaval each year. More of a beginning/intermediate group, and much smaller in size, the UCD Samba School focuses on traditional batucada drumming learned by rote as in the tradition in Rio. Another style that this ensemble can perform depending on the availability of our singers, is Samba Pagode, a form of samba that developed in the late 1980’s and is super popular in Brazil today. This style of music is meant to be performed at the backyard barbecue, and the first group that developed it is Do Fundo do Nosso Quintal, literally The Depth of Our Back Yard, referring to the place they created this music.
