Join us for an extraordinary evening celebrating the living tradition of shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute, with world-renowned performer Kakizakai Kaoru from Chichibu, Japan.

Experience a performance of the meditative honkyoku (本曲) repertoire, passed down from Edo period Buddhist monks, followed by an interactive shakuhachi session where guests can explore the instrument firsthand.

Artist Bio:

Kakizakai Kaoru (柿堺香) is an internationally acclaimed performer and teacher of shakuhachi, the vertical bamboo flute of Japan. A dedicated student of Yokoyama Katsuya from 1982 until 2010, Kakizakai is a senior holder of the Watazumi-Yokoyama tradition. He has performed extensively across Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Australia, collaborating with orchestras including the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and more.

Kakizakai serves as a principal instructor and administrator at the Kokusai Shakuhachi Kenshūkan (International Shakuhachi Training Institute), president of the Chichibu and Nerima schools, lecturer at the Tokyo College of Music, and instructor at the NHK Cultural Center.

His repertoire spans both traditional honkyoku melodies and contemporary compositions, making him one of the most versatile and sought-after shakuhachi masters worldwide.
