Model United Nations Club offers great event

The event is Thursday, May 23 at 7:00 PM in the ARC Ballroom at UC Davis. There will be a three-course Afghan dinner, a keynote speaker on education and development, performances by the Salsa club and Afghan Student Association, and an international fashion show.

Most importantly, 75% of the profits will go to a charity that builds schools in Afghanistan for girls. The tickets are $16 pre-sale and $18 at the door. They can be bought on the Quad at the Memorial Union tables from 11 AM – 2 PM Monday through Friday and at the UC Davis ticket office website.

Annual Membership meeting brings 5 new board members

We are happy to welcome several new board members to I-House. Their three-year terms will begin July 1.

They are: Liz McCapes, a VP of Brown Construction; Nathalie Minya, originally from Zimbabwe and the coordinator of the IF International Fashion Show; Karina Schmitendorf, volunteer English teacher at I-House; Heghnar Watenpaugh, an associate professor of art history at UC Davis born in Lebanon, and Lorrie Bortuzzo, the coordinator of the IHD Friendship Program who escaped Minnesota and came to California .

Please help welcome this extraordinary group!

Catherine Mandela was great! More shows coming…

The Children’s International Storytelling Program is going extremely well this year with fascinating performers and loads of kids having a great time. Catherine Mandela played “Instruments From Around the World” to more than a dozen youngsters.

Next up will be a poetess — Allegra Silberstein — and you won’t want to miss it! She will be in the Hagan Room (note room change) on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m. describing “Poetry: Movement and Memory.”

Then, on June 9, a musical storyteller and champion whistler will perform in the Community Room — Milt Briggs. Do you think you are a good whistler? Come and find out if you are as good as Milt! The gig starts at 2 p.m.

Admission is free for I-House members, and only $2 for nonmembers or $5 for a family of nonmembers.

This is all made possible by a grant from Target.

Book launch on Saturday, April 20

Join us on Saturday (yes, Picnic Day) from 7 to 9 p.m. at International House Davis, 10 College Park, for a book reading by Karen Levy of Davis. “My Father’s Garden” is the story of a young girl who comes of age in two languages on two shores and between warring parents. She struggles to find her voice, torn between her native Israel and the United States. Is she more Israeli or American? How will she know when she has arrived home? She choose to slowly transplant bits of her father’s garden on American soil.

Free to the public!

Join English class on Sundays at 5 p.m.

What’s the weekend without an English class? Join us in the Hagan Room at 5 p.m. on Sundays for an English class taught by volunteers Karen Vraa and Miriam Mariela Mascareno.

“This small class provides tutoring for those learning English as a second languages,” said Elisabeth Sherwin, executive director of International House Davis. “We offer 20 language classes per week including eight English classes.”

Membership is only $20 a year for students, $40 for community members. Memberships include access to all language classes from French to Sanskrit and entry to dance classes: tango, salsa and zumba.

Third art healing program on April 28

The works of Pablo Picasso will be studied and imitated at the third art healing program at I-House on Sunday, April 28 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. If the day is fine, we will meet outside.

All ages are invited; you need not bring any supplies — all will be provided. Bahram Khanjani is the artist who will lead the workshop, sponsored by Senses Cultural and International House Davis.

Tonight, tonight! Salsa class begins at I-House

A weekly Salsa Casino Class for Beginners starts tonight, April 16, in the I-House Community Room. The class is for couples only.

from Colombia will be the instructors. Whether your goal is learning new moves for the dance floor, becoming a professional dancer or getting in better shape, just come and start learning!

Classes will be held Tuesday nights in the Community Room at International House Davis.

No class on April 23, but classes resume on April 30.

Admission for I-House members is free.

Non-members $7 per person per class

Storytellers coming up offering music, poetry

Join the next International Storytelling program at International House Davis on Sunday when Catherine Mandela puts on a musical program called “Instruments of the World.”

The performance will begin at 2 p.m. Mandela plays it all: a huge number of international and exotic musical instruments. While living in Italy she played in a reggae band and also performed with Middle Eastern musicians. After returning to California, she played tenor sax for the Star Duster’s Orchestra swing band and sax/flute/percussion for the Orchestra Variedad Salsa-Merengue band in the Bay Area. Immersing herself in world music, she created Sambandha ~ Music of the World and manages to travel, teach music and eco-musicology, and work for California as an environmental scientist.

Next month, poet laureate Allegra Silberstein will entertain children at I-House in the Hagan Room on May 19. The prgram is called “Poetry: Movement and Memory>”

She is thinking about having the children write a group poem or in some way offering an interactive program.

Then, on Sunday, June 9, I-House will present Milt Briggs of Sacramento, a musical storyteller and champion whistler.

“Join us the day after Picnic Day when the kids might need to decompress,” said Elisabeth Sherwin, executive director. “We offer a storytelling program once a month and children age 3 to 9 are welcome to attend with a parent.” For more information phone I-House at (530) 753-5007.

See works by Gandiol, Judson at I-House

In May two shows will continue at International House Davis : Philippe Gandiol is showing his oil paintings in the Community Room and Marilyn Judson is showing her paper sculptures in the Lounge. He is showing three still lifes, and an array of oils on canvas and linen depicting scenes from Northern California.

Judson’s show is titled “Then and Now.”

“Something about working with paper is very exciting to me and I always come back to it in one form or another,” she said. “Paper sculpture is my latest venture.”

In June, I-House will show works by Lucy Sargeant in the Community Room and a group show “Let Our Voices Be Heard,” led by Raquel Rojas, will be in the Lounge. The artists represented in the group show include: Rocky Rojas, Shelly Kousnetz, Melissa Marzan, Kevin Lozano, Faire Yang and Brea Dawson. Sandy Holman, a member of the I-House board, is assisting with the show, which promotes expression of identity, values and culture through the power of art. She can be reached at (530) 902-4334.

Jeffrey Granett, chair of the I-House Art Committee, will be exhibiting new work at Logos Books downtown, 513 Second St., with the opening reception on Friday, May 10.

“No linoleum block prints this year,” he said. “Something different: Plexiglas drypoint prints. Come see. Opinions needed.”
